Tips for making the best Chinese Ribs.
While bone-in ribs are traditional for this recipe, you can use boneless ribs if preferred. Just adjust the cooking time accordingly as boneless ribs may cook faster. For maximum flavor, marinate the pork ribs overnight. This allows the flavors to penetrate the meat fully.
More helpful tips for you.
- To prevent the ribs from drying out during cooking, ensure they are fully submerged in the marinade while in the crockpot and cover them tightly with aluminum foil while broiling to retain moisture.
- Using high-quality soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, and other ingredients for the marinade can enhance the flavor of the ribs even more.
- Instead of marinating your ribs in a large bowl, you can transfer the marinade covered ribs to a (or as many zip top bags as you need) large and sturdy zip top bag. Just make sure that the ribs are all covered with the marinade before refrigerating.
- After slow cooking your ribs in the crockpot or slow cooker, remove any excess fat before broiling. This helps prevent flare-ups in the oven and ensures the ribs are not overly greasy.
- Broiling the ribs at the end adds a crispy texture to the exterior while keeping the inside tender and juicy.
- Can you substitute other spices for Chinese five spice powder?
While I would not recommend it if you are looking for authentic Chinese tasting ribs, you can create a similar flavor profile by using a combination of cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds, star anise, and Szechuan peppercorns. - Not a fan of ribs? This marinade works well with recipes such as chicken, beef, or tofu. Simply adjust the cooking time and method based on the protein you choose.
