- This recipe can be prepared in advance. Simply place the ingredients (except for the topping) into the slow cooker, cover the cooker, and refrigerate it. When you are ready to slow cook, continue with the instructions (I would let the slow cooker sit at room temperature for five to ten minutes before heating).
- Can you make this recipe using fresh potatoes? Yes, but you should grate them firs.
- This recipe can be made in an oven. Use a large casserole dish and baked at 350 for about 45-50 minutes.
- My potatoes were made in a large 6-Quart Crockpot. If you are using a smaller sized slow cooker you may need to adjust the ingredients so that it can all fit.
- Corn flake cereal is baked to make it even more crunchy. Other options for a crunchy topping that you can use instead include potato chips, tortilla chips, or even crackers can work (crushed).
- Once you add the topping to the slow cooker, make sure that you leave the lid off to prevent them from getting soggy.
- Make this into a meal by adding a protein element such as diced ham or sausage (precooked).

Expert Tip 👉 The potatoes can be slow cooked on high for about three hours however, the texture can get a 'gritty' texture because of the dairy ingredients.
How to Store Funeral Potatoes
Once your potatoes have fully cooled, they should be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, funeral potatoes can be stored for up to five days when refrigerated or up to a month when frozen. Note that it is best to add the topping before serving rather than storing it as they tend to get soggy.
