Tips for making the best slow cooker Potatoes Au Gratin.

The best potatoes to use in this recipe have a higher starch content that can hold up to slow cooking. Russet potatoes are the best ones to use however, Yukon gold are an all purpose potato that can work in this recipe as well.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. My potatoes had the skin removed before making this recipe. If you decide to keep the skin on your potatoes, make sure that the potatoes have been cleaned first.
    2. When slicing your potatoes, the slices should be about the same size in width (about a quarter inch wide) for uniform slow cooking.
    3. Any kind of Cheddar Cheese can be used (I like sharp) in this recipe. Other kinds of cheeses that are commonly used in au gratin potatoes include Gruyère or Parmesan or a blend.
    4. My potatoes were made in a large 6-Quart Crockpot. If you are using a smaller sized slow cooker you may need to adjust the ingredients so that it can all fit.
    5. Make this into a meal by adding a protein element such as cooked diced ham or sausage (precooked).
    6. I like to stir the potatoes occasionally to help them cook evenly.
Crockpot Potatoes Au Gratin, an easy and delicious slow cooker recipe made with thinly sliced russet potatoes in a creamy sauce.

How to make Crockpot Potatoes Au Gratin.

    Prep Time: 20 minutes .
    Slow Cook Time : 4 ½ to 5 hours .
    Servings: 6- 8.

    1. Prep. Prepare your potatoes as indicated. Also, because there is melted cheese involved, prep your slow cooker using nonstick or as desired.
    2. Sauce. To make your sauce, melt your butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat and then whisk in the flour. Cook this for about a minute and then gradually whisk in the heavy cream and milk, whisking constantly. When the sauce has thickened remove it from the heat.
    3. Cheese. Whisk in the seasonings and then cheese into your sauce, reserving a half cup of the cheese for the topping, and then the sliced onions.
    4. Layer. Make the bottom layer by evenly placing half of the sliced potatoes, evenly spread out, on the bottom of your slow cooker. Top the potatoes with the cheese sauce and then repeat the process.
    5. Slow Cook. Cover the slow cooker and slow cook for four hours. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top of the potatoes, cover, and continue to cook on low until the potatoes are fork-tender and the sauce is bubbly (another 30 minutes to an hour).

Expert Tip 👉 Avoid keeping these potatoes slow cooking after they are done cooking as the sauce can become too thick due to the starch content. If this happens, you can try stirring in a bit of milk to try thinning it out.

How to store Potatoes Au Gratin

Once your potatoes have fully cooled they can be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, au gratin potatoes should keep for about three days when refrigerated. Freezing works best when frozen in individual servings for up to a few months.
