More helpful tips for you.
- If you prefer a slightly sweeter salsa verde, you can add a teaspoon or two of honey, agave syrup, or a pinch of sugar. This can help balance the tanginess of the tomatillos and lime juice.
- Using your broiler to roast the ingredients is the quickest and most efficient way to roast them. However, they can also be cooked in the oven at 400°F for 15-20 minutes, just drizzle them with a bit of olive oil beforehand.
- This recipe is made by first roasting the tomatillos, garlic, and jalapeño pepper, which will give the salsa a rich flavor. Using a broiler works best however, you will need to keep an eye on the roasting ingredients to make sure that they do not burn. Slightly charred is okay for this recipe.
- The skin from the garlic cloves should slide right off after roasting. There is no need to crush, slice, mince, or do anything else to the cloves other than roasting them.
- Can I substitute tomatillos with green tomatoes? While both tomatillos and green tomatoes have a similar color, they have distinct flavors. Tomatillos have a tangy and slightly citrusy taste, while green tomatoes are more tart. It's best to use tomatillos for an authentic salsa verde flavor.
- Do I have to roast the tomatillos, jalapeño pepper, and garlic? It’s totally up to you! Roasting the tomatillos, garlic, and jalapeño pepper adds depth and complexity to the salsa verde. It enhances their natural sweetness and imparts a smoky flavor
