    • How to serve : Serve as an appetizer or as part of a meal.
    • Notes: You will need a bowl, saucepan, whisk, and tongs to make this recipe.

    1. Chicken. Place the chicken in a large bowl. In a small bowl, use a whisk to combine together all of the seasonings. Then evenly coat or dry rub the chicken pieces with the combined seasonings. Let the chicken sit with the seasonings for about five minutes while you prepare your air fryer.
    2. Air Fry While your chicken is sitting, you can prep your air fryer basket with a liner or take the basket out of the oven and spray it with nonstick. Place the coated chicken into your air fryer in a single layer if possible. Air fry the chicken for 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes, stopping to flip the chicken over halfway through (10 minutes).
    3. Sauce. In a medium saucepan on medium-high heat, bring the remaining ingredients, except for the cornstarch and water, to a boil while whisking constantly. When the mixture begins to boil you can reduce the heat to a simmer.
    4. Slurry. In a small bowl, use a whisk or a fork to combine together the cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Add this to the ingredients in the saucepan, whisking the ingredients constantly until thickened.
    5. Coat. To coat the chicken with the sauce you can transfer the air fried chicken from the air fryer to large bowl and toss with the sauce. Another option is to dip the wings into the sauce. You can then transfer the coated wings to a baking sheet to set (you can place the chicken on on a wire cooling rack placed on top of the baking sheet or line the baking sheet with parchment paper).

Tips for making the best Air fryer Honey Garlic Wings.

After breaking the chicken into halves, use a clean paper towel to blot off any excess liquid from the chicken. This will help the chicken get crisp and allow for the seasonings to stick to the chicken.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. The chicken prep step in this recipe can be done the night before and then covered and refrigerated. The sauce can also be prepped the night before and heated up the next day, adding the slurry when heated.
    2. When placing the chicken into the air fryer, try to leave space for the air to circulate between the chicken wings. This will allow for the chicken to properly cook and evenly cook. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to make this recipe in batches.
    3. Since it will take about 20 minutes for your chicken to air fry, you can make your sauce while the chicken is air frying. Remember that chicken is done cooking when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.

    FAQ

    • Can I make this recipe in an oven? Yes. To make this recipe in an oven preheat the oven to 400°F, place the wings on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway.
    • Why is there so much black pepper in this recipe?
These wings use black pepper for "creeping heat." It provides a woody, floral warmth that complements the ginger perfectly. You can reduce the amount of pepper needed if you want to.
    • Why are my wings not staying crispy once I toss them in the sauce.
When this happens it can be because of one of two likely reasons:
Too much sauce was used to glaze the chicken and allowing the sauce to sit on the chicken too long. It is best to toss the wings in the sauce immediately before serving. If they sit for 10 minutes, they can lose that "shatter-crunch."
    • Can I use frozen wings?
Yes, but they must be fully thawed and patted dry with paper towels. Frozen wings release a lot of excess moisture; if you don't dry them thoroughly, the cornstarch will turn into a gummy paste rather than a crispy crust.

    Variations.
    .

    • This recipe can also be used on cut up chicken breast or cauliflower, making adjustments in ingredients and air frying as needed.
    • Add a teaspoon of ground Sichuan peppercorns to the dry rub or a teaspoon of Chiu Chow Chili Oil for a more intense flavor.
    • Make my Chinese 5 Spice Seasoning and whisk it into your slurry for more of a "classic" Cantonese flavor. I would reduce or eliminate the chili flakes and black pepper from the listed ingredients in this recipe.

    How to store chicken wings.

Once your chicken has fully cooled (and within two hours), you can wrap it tightly or place it into an airtight container. When properly stored, chicken breasts should keep for up to three days when refrigerated or up to a few months when frozen.
