Ingredients needed to make homemade onion rings in an air fryer.

The ingredients used in this recipe are basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.

    • Onion. Your onion should be sliced, using the larger pieces for this recipe.
    • Flour. Regular all purpose flour was used to make my rings.
    • Seasonings. My rings were seasoned with paprika, garlic salt, and pepper.
    • Cornstarch. Helps to get the rings crispy by helping the flour stick to the rings. You can omit this if desired.
    • Egg Used to help the dry ingredients stick to the onion.
    • Milk. Water or buttermilk can alternatively be used.
    • Panko. While regular breadcrumbs can be used, Panko style coat the onion rings better and make for a crisper onion ring as a result.

Tips for making the best air fried onion rings.

Select an onion that is fresh, firm, and in good shape. The best onions to use are white, yellow, or sweet (vidalia) onions.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. Regular all purpose flour was used to make my onion rings. An alternative, such as almond flour or gluten free flour, can be used.
    2. This recipe involves setting up a dredging station with three bowls. When transferring the sliced onion between bowls, make sure that you shake of the ingredients from the first bowl before dipping the onion into the second bowl.
    3. Make the onion slices about a quarter to a half inch wide to make sturdy rings that can hold their shape.
    4. Spraying the rings with a bit of oil before placing them into the fryer basket can help make them get crispy.
    5. Soaking the sliced onions in cold water for 10-15 minutes can help take bold or bitter flavor.
    6. When airfrying, leave room in the basket for the air to circulate. This will allow the rings to air fry more evenly.
