Tips for making the best crockpot BBQ Chicken.
Chicken breasts were used to make my barbecue chicken. You can alternatively use boneless and skinless chicken thighs.
More helpful tips for you.
- A large crockpot was used to make my chicken. Depending on size of your slow cooker, you may need to adjust the ingredients to fit.
- Frozen chicken can be used in this recipe. You will need to add extra time to your cook time however.
- Take the heat up a notch to make this even more authentic. You can add pepper flakes or hot sauce to spice up the sauce.
- Shredding chicken can be easily done by using two forks. You can make this even easier to do by using a mixer to shred.
- To thin out your sauce, you can stir in some broth or apple cider.
- If you find that your sauce seems to thin after slow cooking you can thicken it. Simple stir in 1:1 cornstarch and water (for up to two tablespoons each).
How to make Crockpot Barbecue Chicken Recipe
Prep Time: 10 minutes .
Slow Cook Time: 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low .
Servings: 6 .
- Prep your slow cooker as desired. Then place the chicken breasts into the slow cooker.
- Add the barbecue sauce and seasonings to the slow cooker (image 2).
- Cover your slow cooker, set the temperature on low, and cook for six to eight hours (or high for three to four hours).
- Check on the chicken and stir it periodically while it is slow cooking. If the sauce seems thin, you can remove the chicken during the last 30 minutes of cooking and set it aside. Then in a small bowl, whisk the cold water and cornstarch together and add it to the sauce in the slow cooker, stirring thoroughly.
- Your chicken is done slow cooking when it is 'pull-apart tender' and reaches an internal temperature of at least 165℉.
- When your chicken has finished cooking, carefully use two forks to shred it. You can transfer the chicken to a work area, such as a cutting board, to do this and then return it to the slow cooker (image 3).
- Stir the chicken and sauce in the slow cooker so that the chicken is well covered with the sauce. Then serve as desired.
Expert Tip 👉 Avoid overcooking your chicken as it will turn out dry and not as appetizing. You can set the slow cooker on warm if needed.
How to store barbecue chicken.
Once the chicken has fully cooled, you can store in an airtight container. When properly stored, this chicken should keep for up to five days when refrigerated or up to six months when frozen (you can thaw it in the refrigerator before reheating it).
