Ingredients needed to make homemade potato chips in an air fryer.

The best kind of potatoes for this recipe are potatoes that are starchy and can hold up to being sliced and cooked. I like russet, Idaho, or even Yukon gold potatoes for this recipe.

Here are the ingredients needed for this recipe.

    • Potatoes. The potatoes should be scrubbed since the skins will stay on.
    • Seasonings. My potatoes were made with Himalayan pink salt and freshly ground pepper.
    • Olive Oil. A small amount is used to help the seasoning stick to the potatoes and help to get them crisp.

Expert Tip 👉 While not required for this recipe, you can choose to soak your potatoes to remove excess starch (this can prevent soggy chips). Simply soak the potato slices in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours. Then drain and pat the potatoes dry to remove the excess water.

Tips for making the best air fried potatoes.

Russet potatoes that are sliced thin will become more crisp. On the other hand, for a denser, slightly sweet chip, you can use Yukon Golds.

    More helpful tips for you.

    1. When you slice your potatoes, slice them to 1/16" to ⅛" thick.
    2. Using a mandoline to slice your potatoes will ensure uniform potato slices and more uniform cooking.
    3. When you place the potato slices in your air fryer, it is okay to layer them in two layers. The outer sides of the slices can overlap and still cook.
    4. Toss (using tongs) or shake the basket with the potato slices at about halfway through baking (about seven minutes). This helps to keep the chips from sticking together and helps them bake more evenly.
    5. When you transfer the chips from the air fryer to cool make sure that they are spread out rather than stacked on top of one another.
    6. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to make this recipe in batches.
