Tips for making the best bourbon chicken.
Chicken breasts were used to make my bourbon chicken. You can alternatively use boneless, skinless chicken thighs.

- You can also make this recipe into a honey bourbon chicken. To make this a “Honey Bourbon Chicken” simple swap out the brown sugar for honey (it's 1:1 swap).
- Take the heat up a notch to make this even more authentic. You can add pepper flakes or hot sauce to spice up the sauce.
- Lemon juice adds acid to the chicken which helps in making it tender. The lemon juice can be swapped with apple cider vinegar for the same result.
- Don't have bourbon on hand? Similar beverages, such as whiskey, can also work in this recipe.
- Can I make Bourbon Chicken without bourbon? Yes, if you do not want to use bourbon, you can use chicken broth or apple juice instead.
- If you find that your sauce seems to thin after slow cooking you can thicken it. Simple stir in 1:1 cornstarch and water (for up to two tablespoons each).
How to make Crockpot Bourbon Chicken
Prep Time : 10 minutes .
Slow Cook Time : 6-7 hours on low (3-4 hours on high) .
Servings: 8, depending on how it is served. .
- Place your chicken breasts, chopped onion, and minced garlic into your slow cooker.
- In a medium bowl, use a whisk to mix together your bourbon, chicken broth, brown sugar, soy sauce, lemon juice, tomato paste, and ground ginger. Then pour this mixture over the chicken in the slow cooker.
- Cover your slow cooker, set the temperature on low, and cook for six to seven even hours (or high for three to four hours.
- Check on the chicken periodically while it is slow cooking. If the sauce seems thin, you can remove the chicken during the last 30 minutes of cooking and set it aside. Then in a small bowl, whisk the cold water and cornstarch together and add it to the sauce in the slow cooker, stirring thoroughly.
- Your chicken is done slow cooking when it is 'pull-apart tender' and reaches an internal temperature of at least 165℉.
- When your chicken has finished cooking, carefully use two forks to shred it. You can transfer the chicken to a work area, such as a cutting board, to do this and then return it to the slow cooker.
- Stir the chicken and sauce in the slow cooker so that the chicken is well covered with the sauce. Then serve as desired.
Expert Tip 👉 Does the alcohol in the bourbon cook off in a slow cooker? According to experts, yes. However if you are worried about the alcohol not fully cooking off, you can turn the slow cooker to high and remove the lid. After cooking for about 30 minutes, the alcohol should evaporate. You can add broth as needed to replace the lost liquid.
How to store this shredded slow cooker chicken.
Once the chicken has fully cooled, you can store in an airtight container. When properly stored, this chicken should keep for up to five days when refrigerated or up to six months when frozen (you can thaw it in the refrigerator before reheating it).
