Tips for making the best Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes.
When selecting potatoes, select starchy potatoes that are able to hold up to pressure cooking. Russet potatoes and yukon gold potatoes are my go-to potatoes for a recipe such as this one.
More helpful tips for you.
- When slicing up your potatoes, slice them into uniform one inch sized pieces to ensure even pressure cooking.
- If desired you can a small amount of seasoning to the potatoes before cooking them. You can then adjust the flavor after they have pressure cooked with more accurate seasoning.
- Your potatoes are done pressure cooking when they are fork-tender.
- Carefully mash the potatoes while they are still warm. Waiting for them to cool down will make it harder to mash.
- If your potatoes seem too thick for your liking while you are mashing them, you can stir in additional butter or milk.
- Lastly, use a potato masher or ricer rather than a blender or food processor as blenders and food processors can over-mix the potatoes and make them gummy in texture. Some folks like to use a hand mixer at a low speed but, that can get a bit messy.

How to store mashed potatoes.
Once your mashed potatoes have fully cooled, they should be stored in an airtight container. When properly stored, mashed potatoes should keep for up to a few days but, they may be a bit dry (you can gently heat them with butter or milk stirred in). Frozen potatoes can last for up to a few months.
